Should all of life be connected to practice? Zazen and only zazen?

Master Kosen – Published on December 27 – practice

Question

Master, since I started practicing zazen, I have left my girlfriend, and honestly I do not miss her. What I do miss is having someone to share not just practice with, but life. I am tired of going around to “see what happens.” I do NOT really know what is happening to me. I suppose practice is not everything, or is it? Should all of life be connected to practice? Zazen and only zazen? And what about everything else? Thank you for listening, Master. A hug.

Answer from Master Kosen

Love comes and goes; sometimes it stays, sometimes it does not. This has nothing to do with zazen. It is karma, the actions of life. Doing zazen and devoting your life to zazen does not keep you from meeting others.
And ultimately, when you truly practice zazen, you do it for all existences, without separation.
