Is it just me, or does this happen to all of us?

Question

Sometimes I walk into the dojo feeling really energized, by which I mean very
eager to practice. After zazen—not always, but sometimes—there is someone next to
me who is ill or in a lot of pain, and all of that affects me. Is it just
me, or does this happen to all of us?

Thank you very much. See you.

Answer from Master Kosen

Hello, Sergio:

I think what happens to you is personal, and from my point of view it is good, because
this way you are compelled to share the spirit of Zen with another person to
try to help them free themselves from suffering. The circumstances of your life
enable you to act as a bodhisattva, and that is good. Many people think that
zazen is only for themselves, and that limits zazen. The bodhisattva path
is the one where others and I are one. It is the Way.

Best regards,

Kosen
