A tremendous effort of concentration

Question

At certain moments when practicing swordsmanship with a partner, I have “blank spells” when I cannot concentrate at all, but instead feel I encompass the entire action as my partner attacks. As a result, I anticipate his movement with great ease. Yet I do not find this state when I meditate. It happens especially after a tremendous effort of concentration that accomplished nothing. Some texts mention the “dance of the elements.” I wanted to know whether that refers to this state and what it consists of, because the term is a bit vague to me… Thank you.

Master Kosen’s answer

Your question is a little vague to me too. There are countless states and sensations, and we cannot name each one. Do not stop to define them or give them names. Keep training every day; bow when entering and leaving the mat, without commentary.
