Master Kosen – Published on March 14 – money

Question

“I do not understand why attending sesshins is so expensive. For a very long time I have tried to save the necessary money but never manage it. My resources are truly very limited, and it makes me sad not to have access to a master because of my social class. I practice zazen every day, but I know I need a master… Thank you
in advance.”

Master Kosen’s answer

When I began zazen, I had absolutely nothing. I was homeless, as people say today. My master told me with an admiring look, “You are a truly poor man.”
I was determined to meet a master and practice; nothing prevented me.
I myself have accepted many disciples in this situation, but I do not let myself be fooled by people who hide behind their poverty to avoid practicing.
