Question
Since you were a close disciple of Deshimaru, why are you not part of the group of teachers at the Paris Zen dojo? What do you think of the way they—the main godos—transmit the Way?
What does receiving the rakusu or ordination mean to you? Is it really so important to find one particular master and follow his teaching? Isn’t it better to gather teachings here and there, including from books, practice zazen as one pleases, and remain free of all influence?

Master Kosen’s answer
They kicked me out a long time ago to take my place, and they have no desire to see me again.
I understand them; it is human. Too bad they are not buddhas, or even bodhisattvas. No, they are ordinary, disappointing human beings, unable to rise above their petty calculations and human ambitions.
