Question
I read Master Dogen’s commentary on “The Eight Satoris of a Great Person.” I can draw a correspondence with the Eightfold Path, except for “CHISOKU,” CONTENTMENT WITH WHAT ONE HAS. What is the connection with right action?
Should we understand that what WE HAVE is simply the fruit of past actions?
Is CHISOKU the recognition of karma and its cessation through practicing the precepts?
Gassho.

Answer from Master Kosen
Dogen’s Eight Satoris of a Great Person is something different from the Eightfold Path, even if points of agreement can always be found. Mixing everything with everything does not make the best cooking.
