Question

I am troubled by accusations of sectarianism surrounding the AZI, but also Master Deshimaru himself and his disciples. Can you tell me something about this?

Master Kosen’s answer

Tell me, where are today's free people? Who is allowed to think for themselves? Even the media, therefore information, are provided or censored by sects. Who do you think divides our country among themselves if not political sects obeying still more powerful financial sects? Everyone belongs to a network, criminal or otherwise. If you are not part of a network, success is seriously compromised. Besides, everyone wants to belong to a group. So why not a sect that practices Buddha's meditation? Indeed, Buddhism is a sect; the Soto Zen we practice is a sect. In Japanese it is called Soto-shu, meaning the Soto sect. It is a sect born over a thousand years ago in China, of course tracing its lineage from master to disciple back to Shakyamuni Buddha himself. In my view it has harmed no one, at most a few kwats shouts and legendary blows with sticks. Traditionally, you are sometimes prevented from entering if you do not show sufficient motivation, but never from leaving. Zen and Buddhism are certainly not extremist sects, even though practice is vigorous. And what could be more wholesome than always seeking balance and following the Middle Way at every moment? Forgive me, but if Islam, Judaism, and Christianity are not sects, I will gladly become a priest. Wake up! All the history books read to us at school are hateful sectarian propaganda; France itself is a sect. You have been brainwashed since childhood and only realize it now. Is there still time for you to free yourself and breathe for yourself?

You will tell me the air itself is polluted by sects.
