Question

What kind of magical powers is Master Deshimaru referring to in his answer to “What about magic powers?” in the list of questions and answers?
I see you quote Castaneda in your book’s introduction. Do Zen masters’ teachings include anything about “lucid dreams”?

Answer from Master Kosen

Magical power or magical expression lies above all in the way we perceive things, perceive the world. Magic is not obscurantism or something mysterious, at least not in Zen.
True magical power is not entirely conscious. It can be seen from outside: people may perceive the master’s behavior or teaching as magical, but the master does not do it consciously. True magical power is not doubting. When we speak of spiritual awakening, it is indeed about awakening from one’s dream or awakening within one’s dream.
