Is helping your family more important than helping strangers?

Question

The philosopher Peter Singer argues that in the “global village” we now live in, we have no moral alternative but to help those in need until we become as poor as they are. The opposing argument holds that providing for one’s family is a virtue and that raising one’s children generously, without extravagance, matters more than helping poor people far away. I wonder how a modern Zen master like you resolves this dilemma. Thank you for your time and attention. I hold you in the highest respect. Sincerely,

Take care of what you have to take care of according to the opportunity that presents itself.
