Question

Master, I would like to ask you something that has been on my mind for a long time: is attention in everyday life a matter of will, or does it arise without the will’s involvement as practice deepens?

Hello,

It is like zazen. I think that at first, you need the will to observe yourself. Then, once this state of observation becomes fairly automatic in everyday life, we can practice attention naturally. We must realize that no state is permanent: it comes, goes, and stabilizes.

Best wishes,

Kosen
