Question
"Master Deshimaru said: I prefer hell to heaven; at least there we can meet our companions and drink freely with them. That is being mushotoku. People who fear the hellish cycle of transmigration are deadly boring." Yet in Buddhism generally, and Tibetan Buddhism especially, it is said that fear of transmigration and an unfortunate rebirth within samsara is the main driving force of Dharma practice. A practitioner aware of the difficulty of obtaining another human birth realizes how precious and privileged their condition is and aspires to only one thing: not to waste it, but to practice the Dharma to attain awakening for the good of all beings. What do you think?

Master Kosen’s answer
When you go down a fast river, you cannot avoid the whirlpools in its bed. On one side, Deshimaru "acting tough"; on the other, the priest instilling fear and the religious desire to escape who knows what. Zazen is the right attitude, period.
