Question
Since age 14—I am now 33—I have been interested in Buddhism,
particularly Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, through books by M. Smedt, M. Deshimaru,
and the Dalai Lama, without ever really practicing. I would like to know whether
it is possible to practice without a master, because where I live the
dojos are too far away. I am afraid of going wrong on my solitary path.
The question concerns zazen, of course—here and now, zanshin—but
also Buddhism: studying the Four Noble Truths, compassion, and
impermanence. Would attending a few sesshins to be corrected and hopefully
have some mondos be enough to advance on the Way, with
daily practice of course? And which books should a
beginner like me read?
Thank you in advance for your attention.
Stephane.
