Question
I cannot understand how it is possible to have a professional life in our society (pursuing results, profit, ambition…) while practicing zazen regularly (stop everything!). Too many paradoxes. Can you enlighten me on this?
Thank you in advance.

There is no problem with setting a goal and reaching it, no problem with making sure you earn money, no problem with having a great ambition and fulfilling it.
Why do we say that zazen is without a goal?
Because zazen is totality. If we have a goal, we cannot attain totality. But once zazen is over, we must narrow our ambition and set limited goals, concentrate on them single-mindedly without getting distracted, and obtain what we want through concentration and energy. Then life is wonderful.
That is why Zen monks should be the best at whatever work they undertake. If that is not the case, question the way you practice and certain dogmas that have paralyzed you.
