My question is this: How can you gain respect at work
when you are a department head dealing with strong personalities
whose only goal is to piss everyone off and make fools of others? Since
we must free ourselves from our ego and feelings, how can I still
have authority over my staff?

There is no need to abandon the ego, since it is illusory.
For a leader, there are two rules to follow to gain respect.
1. Respect and love your subordinates.
2. Demand the same in return.
