Question
I wanted to ask you about a meditative
experience I had at seventeen (I am now forty-three)…
I sat in meditation, in lotus (eyes closed), trying to let
everything go…
I felt my body relax until I forgot it, lost
all sensation of it, and found myself bathed in white light, with a feeling
mixing bliss and fear…
It was “wild meditation.” I think at the time I harbored
quite a few illusions about meditation and what it could be…
But there was this strange passage, this odd contact with another
part of myself, extraordinarily luminous in the literal sense,
benevolent and peaceful, radiating a feeling of fullness…
There is something rather frustrating about it, because this “window” opened only
once…
But long enough to give me the message that somewhere
within me there was a source of unspeakable, luminous fullness…
A strange experience, of which I cannot give another
reading or interpretation, because of its unique,
one-time nature…
So I read about this sort of phenomenon. The Bardo Thodol
describes it as our fundamental nature, which we encounter in the passage
from one life to another…
For me, it was just a very brief, rather troubling experience…
The question I wanted to ask is:
Knowing your great experience of meditation, I wanted to know whether this
kind of phenomenon is common among meditators, and whether you have
experienced it. Isn’t it strange that it happened so
fortuitously?
Thank you in advance for shedding light on it… lol.
Warmly,
Mumyo
