A lack of discipline

Question

I should be asleep at this hour. But perhaps recognizing a lack of discipline and giving free rein to a frustrated desire can help free us from it. Have certain “Zen” masters used this practice? I have noticed that each supposed truth I take into account could contribute to hiding the truth from myself.

Answer from Master Kosen

The Great Way consists of maintaining a favorable balance. It is like surfing: using forces in positive, complementary ways. If you are thirsty, drink; if hungry, eat. When it is time to be disciplined, be disciplined; when it is time to relax, do so.
Truth is alive, not dead. If you contemplate dead truths, they are indeed only supposed truths.
