Zazen and schizophrenia

Question

I have schizophrenia in remission and have practiced zazen in a dojo since early January 2007. At first, I told my psychiatrist about this practice, and she advised me against Zen, saying it would be dangerous for my mind.

I also spoke to Éric Rommeluère (www.zen-occidental.org), and he too
advised me against it.

Since I began practicing, I feel much better, more “myself,” and more in harmony with others and with “everything.”

Do you think I should continue practicing zazen while having a mild mental problem that is gradually healing?

Thank you in advance…

Answer from Master Kosen

If you can manage this problem intelligently and manage your practice intelligently, everything can go very well.
1: Always keep your medication close at hand and use it as soon as you show symptoms. But try reducing the doses if you feel well. Never stop abruptly; do so gradually.
2: Practice zazen calmly, in moderation, without trying to attain anything particular, while remaining attentive to maintaining the correct posture.
3: Make yourself do sufficient physical activity daily: walking, jogging, manual work, or something else.
4: No drugs, alcohol, or excessive coffee.
Good luck.
