Where is it safest to practice zazen? I would like to read books about life. Where should I start?

Question

Dear Master Kosen,
My knowledge of Buddhism isn’t extensive. It consists of reading a few web pages, including Master Deshimaru’s questions and answers and yours. When I read some of the answers, I get a feeling throughout my body that seems true. Basically, I have a few questions, and I would be most grateful if you would answer them.
1) It seems as if you regard practicing zazen at home as a path for someone who is selfish and seeking personal gain. Does this also include practicing zazen without a master present? Is it possible this isn’t true—for example, wasn’t the first Buddha alone under the tree? Instead of zazen at home, is there something else one can do? Where is it safe to practice zazen?
2) I would like to read a few books about life and wonder whether these two are a good place to start: An Open Heart, by the Dalai Lama, and The Little Book of Wisdom, by the Dalai Lama. Thanks and regards, James Parnis.

Answer from Master Kosen

It is better to practice with others. That is what Master Deshimaru taught me. Zen Master Dogen’s Shobogenzo and Master Deshimaru’s books are good books.
