When someone insults you, shouldn't you strike back?

Question

THANK YOU!!!! Very much for your answer; I am very satisfied. And
I have another concern! What should be most important in
life? People tend to say, “The greatest strength is self-control,“
but when someone insults you, shouldn’t you strike back so as not to
look like an idiot? If you strike back, you can make people respect you, right?

Answer from Master Kosen

Easy, take your time, even if you have to endure it for a few days…
The work must be done inside you; that is where the affront must be washed away. You must be clear with yourself more than with friends or neighbors. When the time comes, strike accurately and calmly, because you know what is legitimate and can forgive.
But in any case, this question is hard to answer, because every case is different. There is really no rule.
