What should I do: follow my heart or my father?

Question

Dear Master Kosen Thibaut,
I practiced zazen for about two years at the Brest dojo. I am now in Paris. Since the academic year began,
I have stopped practicing, much to my regret. But that is not the question (though perhaps…). I face a dilemma: should I continue my history studies (perhaps later, if possible, to study Buddhism), or join my father in his business in Indonesia, a timber business, the often-criticized kind that clears virgin forest? Do you think this sort of activity is wrong? Deep down I know I oppose it.
But in absolute terms, is it really a bad thing? Is it wrong? It also provides work for the growing local population, etc. I do not know. Furthermore, this future profession would put me in contact with a much more material, money-centered world. Would that distance me from the Way? At the same time, I do not feel capable of continuing my history studies.
I tell myself that zazen practice would help me resolve this dilemma while remaining “without self-interest.” But I ask your opinion. To recap: is clearing virgin forest wrong? What profession
should I choose? I thank your assistants for taking the time to read my long letter, and thank you very much, Master Kosen.
Gassho.

Answer from Master Kosen

You are lovely, and whatever you choose, it will go well. You will do good wherever you are. Continue zazen from time to time if your activities leave you a little freedom, and trust your natural intuition. Do not think too much; listen to your heart, your body.

Kosen
