Question

Why aren't all Zen monks vegetarian or vegan? The Buddha was very clear about not harming any creature. Why, then, do they eat meat and animal products? Everything has been said about the horrors and suffering animals endure before ending up on the tables or in the clothing of people who are not vegetarian or vegan. That is why I do not understand why they agree to inflict this kind of suffering on animals.
Thank you.

Answer from Master Kosen

Generally, during sesshins the food is mostly vegetarian, except for festive meals, when meat or fish is offered.
