Question
Some people think they have “the truth.” They are convinced their religion or philosophy is the best. They cannot imagine anything else for themselves. That does not shock me. After all, it is “their truth.” But when it comes to “bringing others into” their way of seeing things, I ask their opinion of this phrase: “One person’s freedom ends where another’s begins.” It seems to me that freedom and truth are intimately connected.
What do you think?

Answer from Master Kosen
Fanaticism is tied to attachment to a philosophy we have not yet understood for ourselves but would like to believe in. But a philosophy is not truth until we have experienced it ourselves. Then, when it becomes our truth, fanaticism disappears, because at the same time we understand other people’s truth.
