Question
All of last week was very mystical for me. I feel there really were several stages. Looking back, I know I helped a few people in need during that time and truly did good things, but as though it were a necessity, as though I had to do it.
But it was during a conversation with my ex that, in a flash, all my hatred, rage, and love fled… I felt peace and liberation. I had understood that he was weak, that he needed help, and that it was my duty to listen to him and say things to
help him. This peaceful feeling was like a drug of happiness and love. I don’t know how to describe it, like a need to love the whole world. This state stayed with me for two days. I had never felt so well; I no longer had the back pain I had had for a year, my complexion was radiant, my face smooth, and I was very motivated to work. I had no worries anymore except loving and helping people, knowing that this filled me with pure fulfillment. I was at peace. I looked differently at people on the Paris metro, finding them beautiful.
It was like shivers, but inside—a state that seemed to come from the chest and spread out, like a kind of ecstasy. And I truly saw Goodness. But at the same time, I instinctively knew the state I was in was only a very, very, very small and tiny part of what it could be. This was the first time anything like this had happened to me,
but on the other hand, I felt it was what I had always been waiting for. I had never felt so much love, never been so “full,” whereas throughout the year I had been depressed and lonely, feeling all the aggression and nastiness of
so many people, longing for my childhood when I had been taught values of kindness, love for others, and so on…
I felt I had understood many things that might previously have seemed a little naive, like this love of the Good and the Beautiful, the relativity of things, and so on… Everything flowed naturally.
I know I have always known deep down that there is someone good in every person, but this time I felt I first saw that Good person in everyone. I also wanted to give them confidence to realize this good person within them, and had an overwhelming desire to take them in my arms.
What do you think happened to me? Do you know whom I can turn to, to tell this story, understand it, and be told what to do? I became interested in Buddhism this year, but only in the basics.
I won’t say I want to regain this state at all costs (even though that is a little true), because I am well aware it is only a consequence, and that would be selfish of me. But those were the two most REAL days of my life… and I know I won’t be able to act as though they
had never happened. Even though this “drug” (I don’t know what word to use) has worn off, I truly understood the importance of certain values and concepts—an almost instantaneous, logical, natural understanding.
I left Paris the day before yesterday, and I am now on Réunion, my native island, for a vacation: a necessary return to my roots that will also allow me to reflect, because I feel what happened will change my life a little, and change me too. Entirely for the better, because it even gave me energy for my work and housework. I saw Reality, and it helped me understand how I was running away and move beyond that.
Tell me whatever you like, perhaps just one sentence, but I need an opinion like yours.
