Question
Hello,
During this summer’s sesshin in Catalonia, you referred to a feeling that might resemble what we feel on discovering we have been the target of a hidden-camera prank.
After the initial hearty laugh during the kusen, I thought about this analogy, and I think I intuitively sense what you meant. On the other hand, I have great difficulty with the notion of the observer (that one I do not feel at all). Could you enlighten me about the relationship between these two notions?
Thank you.
Best regards,
Christophe
Answer from Master Kosen
The one who thought he was very important and realizes he is not is the neocortex; the observer is the reptilian brain.
There are more connections in a hazelnut-sized piece of reptilian brain than in the whole neocortex, yet it is the neocortex that makes us the most advanced beings on the planet.
If we bring the reptilian brain and the neocortex into alignment, life becomes a miracle.
