The hard work of living up to our words

Master Kosen – Published on December 26 – suffering

Question

I have practiced zazen for years. Before, I had religious beliefs and certainties. After the ordeal of illness, everything was swept away. Now all I see is the hard work of being consistent with our words and actions in a suffering world! How can I find a guiding thread, a balance in the middle of nothing?

Answer from Master Kosen

Being consistent with our words and actions in a suffering world is indeed a sad program. Keep tirelessly placing zazen at the center of everything. In zazen you do not speak, you do not act, and you put an end to the ego’s suffering. From there, invent something new without worrying about what is possible or impossible. Do not let your karma impose reality on you.
