Question
Hello Master, and thank you very much for your previous answer.
I do not practice Zen, though I am one of your disciples "in my own way." I draw much nourishment from information online and have participated in various Indigenous spiritual practices; I live in Colombia. About a year ago, I quit smoking for two months. At that time I understood the importance of self-control and its positive consequences for our lives. Nevertheless, I relapsed after a single puff. I would like to quit again, permanently this time, but after a week of effort I relapse. I know it is necessary, but I am too weak to stay the course. What advice could you give me?

Master Kosen’s answer
The worst thing is to contradict yourself. You are addicted and opposed to your addiction at the same time. You want to quit but love smoking too much. In the end you do nothing completely. If you smoke, enjoy it. Tell yourself you may die tomorrow and are quite right to enjoy it. If you quit, look at the positive side of not smoking and rejoice in the improvements you gain more and more each day. Be sovereign over your decisions.
