Question
Is it so important in Zen to know Buddha Shakyamuni's teachings on the Four Noble Truths, and how important are knowing and applying the Noble Eightfold Path?
The question may seem silly, but I would like to know. Does Zen regard the teachings as other branches of Buddhism do, or is it reduced to zazen alone...?
Thank you.

Master Kosen’s answer
The Lotus illuminates life, and life illuminates the Lotus.
The teaching is an understanding for our lives, whereas the dimension of zazen transcends our lives and personal consciousness.
But the two complement and illuminate each other.
