Practicing "solo"

Master Kosen – Published on March 26 – where-and-when

Question

A few years ago, I discovered Deshimaru Roshi’s book “The Practice of Zen,” and it was a revelation to me.

Since then, I have practiced “solo,” because geographical and family circumstances prevent me from joining a practice group. This practice gives me a great deal, and I can feel it has evolved (I hesitate to say progressed). Nevertheless, I wonder whether I risk reinforcing serious errors of posture or understanding over the long term.
Does this practice have meaning?
Sooner or later I will join a practice group; wouldn’t it be better to wait until then to practice?
Christophe.

P.S. Thank you for your website. It is a real joy for people like me
who cannot access an authentic guide.

Answer from Master Kosen

You can certainly attend a sesshin from time to time, which will allow you to be corrected and possibly meet practitioners in your area.
