Question

Is a Zen monk always destined to leave his family? If so, why allow monks to marry?

Master Kosen’s answer

Every time we enter the dojo or temple to practice a sesshin, we leave our family. Every time we leave the dojo or temple, we return to them and help them grow, simply because we have grown. In this way we perfectly fulfill the vows of a monk and those of a bodhisattva.
