Incense smoke

Question

Hello! I would like some advice for getting started. A few days ago, I attended my first introductory zazen session in Barcelona, and I couldn’t get started because of cramps. Then I got cold and felt as though I was suffocating because there was so much incense. I stayed curled up in silence until the end because I didn’t want to disturb the others. So I left telling myself that I absolutely had to find a way to sit and breathe to get started, or it would be hopeless!

I had lymphoma three years ago, and ever since, I have been terrified of getting sick again. A psychologist in Paris who treats me strongly recommended zazen to try to calm me down instead of taking antidepressants.

I have trouble breathing because the treatment paralyzed one lung, and I get cramps in my legs and feet as soon as I sit cross-legged. I have the same problem in my yoga classes, so I no longer go, because I can hardly do anything.

On top of that, sessions in a 20-square-meter dojo with incense, closed windows, and 20 people meditating seem toxic to me. To continue, it is very important that I manage to sit in a healthy environment, so: What do you suggest for getting started peacefully? :-) Thank you!

Answer from Master Kosen

The Barcelona dojo is good. Ask them not to use too much incense and to air out the room before zazen.
