I have schizophrenia

Question

I went to a sesshin not long ago, and I got fed up with all this Zen, these black kimonos, the slowness of the zazen sessions (too long for me)…
I have schizophrenia, and I have noticed that too much zazen is not good for me… Anyway, what would you recommend so I can have an authentic practice?

Best wishes,

Answer from Master Kosen

Generally, in your case, sesshins should be avoided or even prohibited because they can worsen your problems.
I recommend one or two sessions a week, or perhaps a day of zazen from time to time. Continue your treatment normally, and if you see improvement, you can reduce your medication, but very gradually: no more than a quarter of a pill at a time. Stay at the same dose for a week, then try another quarter, and so on. At the first signs of worsening, return to the normal dose. It is important that you learn to manage your own recovery wisely, gently, and patiently.
