How can I know when it is time to practice shikantaza?

Master Kosen – Published on June 3 – where-and-when

Question

At the introductory retreat I attended a few months ago, we were taught to count or follow our breaths as a way to develop concentration. As I understand it, shikantaza involves paying attention to posture rather than breathing.
How can I know when it is time to practice shikantaza?
At the moment, I cannot regularly practice in the presence of a master.

Warm regards.

Jesús

Answer from Master Kosen

Hello, Jesús,

Thank you for your question, but I do not know where you took your introductory retreat, because what you are telling me is incorrect.
Shikantaza includes the body’s posture, breathing, and the attitude of the mind. All three together, in unity. If you want to practice Zen Buddhism, you need to contact a Zen dojo or attend a summer camp session; that is also a good time to get started.

Best wishes,

Kosen
