Faith in the Law

Question

Given that the true spirit of the Law is more powerful than all karma, why do some people remain skeptical when they hear the teaching of great bodhisattvas like you or Deshimaru?

Laurent

By the way, I did pass your book along to F A.

Long live France, haha.

Master Kosen’s answer

Doubt is built into our cultural structure. In Western philosophy, doubt is not only an ethical quality but also a way to advance one's thinking.

We try to approach truth through elimination. This is the method of seeking an objective truth outside ourselves; we also call it science.

The spirit of the Law is a subjective realization in which we find peace and awakening within. These two qualities are not objects we might acquire.

Even in an enlightened, peaceful world, we might personally be without peace. And even in a world of destruction and turmoil, we might feel deep peace within ourselves.

The spirit of the Law is when science and spirituality become one, when the subjective and objective are no longer separate.
