Question

My father has a disability and has practiced seated meditation in his wheelchair for many years. He would like to come with me to the Montpellier dojo one day. Could he bring his wheelchair into the dojo and do zazen facing the wall with us?

Answer from Master Kosen

Yes. Although access to the Montpellier dojo is not specifically adapted for people with disabilities, it would be good for him to let us know before his visit so we can arrange enough help to bring his chair inside. Once inside, there is no problem. I would like to point out that at my temple in the Caroux, we have specifically adapted the dojo entrance for this purpose, and we are working on the issue because I have a close, longtime disciple who uses a wheelchair. It is true that he is young and very athletic and copes better than others with the difficulties of his situation, but we are working on this with him. Although people with disabilities are not the majority of our practitioners, they must be able to participate in our activities if they wish.
