Confronting despair

Question

Having shown great courage and moral strength throughout my life, I find myself struck again and again by painful blows that have not only knocked me off my feet but also limit my ability to fulfill my responsibilities toward others by taking up the time I have available. The sense of defeat is suffocating.
How can I cope more effectively, and where can I find the strength to face these wounds?

Master Kosen’s answer

Every morning before brushing your teeth, create your day by visualizing or saying sentences that express what you want to experience today. When you have done that, say, “So be it!” Then go brush your teeth and live the day you have created, instead of having it imposed on you.
