Being part of a sangha

Master Kosen – Published on June 22 – zazen

Question

I no longer feel the need for a sesshin, to be at the dojo, to be part of a sangha, or to have a Master… Only zazen matters to me. Your opinion? Thank you.

Answer from Master Kosen

Me too… I feel as you do. But bodhisattva practice, the authentic Way, is not a continuous whim in which we constantly focus on analyzing what the ego needs or no longer appreciates. On the contrary, it consists of letting go of the ego and immersing ourselves in practice, harmonizing with the Buddha, the teaching, and the sangha. If practitioners since the Buddha had done nothing but follow their personal tastes, Zen would have ceased to exist long ago, and you would not even be able to talk about it today.
