Question
At a lecture in Paris today, Kojun Kishigami Roshi, a close disciple of Kodo Sawaki, said that in bringing Zen to France, Deshimaru had grafted a simple branch onto a tree but had not planted seeds that could develop deep roots through his transmission.
(I was a little surprised, because Deshimaru’s disciples were in the front row.) He called on practitioners to return to the source, to the masters of India, and so on… What do you think? He also said practice in Japan was more solemn than in France, that here it took place with much
more freedom, joy, and good humor…

Answer from Master Kosen
Close disciples of Kodo Sawaki are popping up everywhere. Let him go help Zen in Japan if he wants to be useful.
