I do not understand "proper breathing." Should I just breathe naturally in zazen, or should I force my stomache out during the exhalation?

It is not necessary to force your breathing. You should follow your own rhythm and automatically your breathing will be correct. Read "True Zen" by zen Master Deshimaru)
