Question

Master Deshimaru said: “ I prefer hell to paradise; there, at least, you can freely have a drink with your friends. This is what Mushotoku is about. People who fear the infernal cycle of transmigration are so boring.”

However, Buddhism, and more particularly Tibetan Buddhism, says that being afraid of transmigration and of being reborn in the Samsara is the main motivation for practicing the Dharma: the practitioner, knowing that it is very difficult to be reborn as a human being, realizes that his present condition is highly valuable and craves only one thing: not to waste his time and practice the Dharma to awaken for the benefit of all beings. What is you opinion?

Answer from Master Kosen

When you float down a swift river, you cannot avoid whirlpools. On one hand, Deshimaru who's “boasting”, on the other hand, the parish pastor who inoculates fear and the religious desire to flee from I do not know what? Zazen is the right attitude, period.
