Staying on site

At the Yujo Nyusanji Zen temple, a monk or nun welcomes you throughout the year (by reservation), whether for a short or long stay. Life is punctuated by the practice of Zen meditation (zazen) and samu.

For samu, everyone can find the task that they can accomplish and that is necessary for the proper functioning of the temple. Samu is carried out in the Zen spirit taught by the practice of zazen.

The temple is located in France in Rosis, near Lamalou-les-Bains and Bédarieux, in the Hérault department on the edge of the Tarn and Aveyron.

In this place of nature and peace, there are many tasks, both outside (gardening, maintenance of the surroundings and tree planting) and inside (small building maintenance work, meal preparation, washing up, cleaning…). This can be an opportunity to train in all these activities, which are also useful in daily life.

Life at the temple also includes moments of relaxation. You can enjoy the mountainous environment and pretty rivers, walk the many hiking trails where wild flora and fauna are abundant, it is the land of mouflons. The temple is located at an altitude of 850 meters.

We look forward to welcoming you for your Zen stay.

Samu at the temple

Weeks of samu take place once a month, with monk Richard Kosen organizing maintenance and renovation work in the temple buildings for six consecutive days. It is like a sesshin (Zen retreat) with two zazens per day at 7 am and 7 pm.

The nuns and monks present share the direction of the zazens. Registration is limited to ten people per week, the rate is fuse (donation). You can come for a few days or the entire week. Outdoor or indoor work depending on the weather. Good mood and positive energy are welcome.

To see the upcoming dates and register, go to the dedicated page: upcoming samus at the temple.

The rates are:

  • Discovery stay: 16 € / day
  • Stay + samu: 8 € / day (outside of samu retreats)

The discovery stay includes discovering the temple and participating in zen meditation (zazen) sessions. The stay + samu is for people who already know the temple, who do sesshins there and wish to stay on site while participating in zazen and samus.

Bring a sleeping bag and warm clothes, even in summer. Remember that the temple is located at an altitude of 850 meters and that the temperature can be 5 to 8 degrees lower than that of the plain, winter and summer alike.
