QUESTION (original) :

Do you think it is possible, that by trying to solve an
unsolvalble existentilal question one can reach satori?

ANSWER :

Some years ago, I read in a sutra that the Buddha had predicted
that 2500 years after his nirvana, men won't reach the satori any more.
Completly dishearted, I asked my master his opinion on the subject.
He answered as following : ' And what, Stephan ? Nowadays, zen monks
don't need satori any more. It has become useless. What a joy ! Maybe one day
buddhism itself will disappear, maybe mankind will be wise enough and won't need
it any more. Only zazen without goal will be left, true zazen in all its purity.
Hopefully ! ''
This answer completly confounded me and even disappointed me.
But now, I don't think this way any longer. I understand that my master was
right. In my sangha, satori is totally useless, nobody speaks about it,
nobody is interested in it. How happy am I to accomplish the true Zen
of my master... Practicing zazen only, that's enough.
