QUESTION (original) :

One has to go to the dojo without expectations. Then, why going to the
dojo to practice every day ?
Can something so difficult as zazen be practiced every day without a reason,
a motivation? How come it is expected a monk to devote himself to the posture
without looking for something valuable for him or the others?

If you do not have the motivation, do something else.

ANSWER :

Practicing daily, without expecting anything,
going through difficulties of the practice day after day,
is not possible without a strong motivation.
Master Eka, Bodhidharma's disciple, cut his arm
to prove his motivation to his master. That has remained
a fundammental symbol of Zen.
