Tanka Shijun

The forty-sixth patriarch was Zen Master Tan-hsia. He asked Fu-jung, "What is the single phrase that all the sages have transmitted from ancient times?" Fu-jung replied, "If you call it a phrase, you really bury the Ts'ao-tung tradition." With these words, the master was greatly awakened.
