Daiyo Kyogen

The forty-third patriarch was Great Master Ta-yang Ming-an. Once, he asked Priest Liang-shan, "What is the formless site of enlightenment?" " Liang-shan pointed to a picture of [the Bodhisattva] Kuan-yin and said, "This was painted by the scholar Wu." The master was about to speak, when Liang-shan suddenly grabbed him and said, "This is what has form; what is it that has no form?" With these words, the master comprehended.
